Billy Powell

Billy Powell (1952-2023) was an American musician best known as the keyboardist for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He played a pivotal role in shaping the band's sound, which blended rock, blues, and country influences. Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972, contributing to their distinctive style with his piano and organ work, most notably on hits like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird." His notable works include the albums *Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd* (1973), *Second Helping* (1974), and *Street Survivors* (1977), the latter released shortly before the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of several band members, including frontman Ronnie Van Zant. Powell survived the crash and later rejoined the band when they reunited in the late 1980s, continuing to perform and record with them until his passing. Billy Powell's impact on music is significant, as he helped define the sound of Southern rock and influenced countless musicians.
