Vince Welnick

Vince Welnick (1951-2019) was an American keyboardist and songwriter best known for his work with the Grateful Dead and the Tubes. A versatile musician, Welnick's genre spanned rock, psychedelic, and progressive music. He joined the Grateful Dead in 1990 as their primary keyboardist after the death of Brent Mydland, contributing to the band’s sound until its dissolution in 1995. His notable works with the Grateful Dead include albums such as "Built to Last" and "So Many Roads," where his keyboard skills and vocal contributions were prominent. Prior to his tenure with the Grateful Dead, Welnick was a key member of the Tubes in the late 1970s and 1980s, known for their theatrical live performances and hits like "She's a Beauty." Welnick also released solo albums, including "Missing Man Formation" in 1998. Welnick's impact on music lies in his ability to blend rock with experimental elements, his contributions to live improvisation, and his role in keeping the spirit of the Grateful Dead alive through various tribute acts and collaborations after the band's breakup.
